Cress, the third installment of the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (possible spoilers ahead for those who have not read Cinder and Scarlet), took me by surprise. I absolutely love the premise of this series as it fuses together science fiction and fantasy, my two favorite genres, (which are unfortunately not combined together often enough). However, although I really enjoyed reading Cinder and being introduced to this world, I found myself bored at times while reading Scarlet, whether because I didn’t particularly enjoy her character or because I was just too invested in Cinder to care much about Scarlet.
Anyways, that didn’t stop me from liking the series, and I have to say, I was immensely excited to pick up Cress. And let me just say, I am SO glad that I did. I flew through this book when I first read it, finishing the entire 550 page volume in a single day, and since then, I’ve read it twice more, because it’s just THAT good. As much as I like Cinder, Cress quickly became my favorite protagonist of the series with her quirky, yet completely relatable personality. The book was so well written, and I found myself fully engaged at all times, never stopping for a break because the story was getting a bit slow. Best of all, though, this book brought back all the characters from the previous two books and connected them all like pieces of an elaborate puzzle. So, whether you like Cinder, Scarlet, or Cress best (not to mention Kai, Wolf, or Thorne), this book won’t leave you disappointed. If you have not yet picked up the Lunar Chronicles, I would definitely recommend doing so as this series has a lot to love.
